Smart China is a three-episode Chinese theme documentary, jointly produced by Discovery and the China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC). This documentary uncovers China’s most ambitious projects and technological innovations, including the project of intelligent lighting for crop production from the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). It premiered recently in the section of Hour China on Discovery Networks Asia Pacific(DNAP).
Smart China would guide the audience to visit China's various innovative laboratories and expert teams and report China's remarkable technological progress. Intelligent Lighting for Crop Growth Project will appear in the third episode of Smart China. And the technological innovation and market prospects of the new photovoltaic (PV) agricultural project is highlighted.

According to Professor LIU Wen, the project leader, from the Province Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Science and Technology of USTC, the innovation team focuses on the bottleneck problem of photovoltaic and agricultural integration, adopts the Modern optical interference filter principle and finally proposes and develops a selective film filtering the red and blue light. This method not only meets the needs of plant photosynthesis, but also ensures the efficiency of photovoltaic power generation. Compared with the existing PV agriculture system at home and abroad, the system is upgraded from simple geometric or intensity spectroscopy to spectral spectroscopy. It is very original and practical. And it not only enables crop production and photovoltaic power generation at the same time, but also reduces farmland irrigation water largely and improves crop yield and quality.

It is reported that USTC Intelligent Lighting for Crop Growth Project has received eight patents. And the new agricultural PV system solution proposed by USTC won the gold medal of ten bright spots based on the scientific and technological innovation of the PV agriculture project in the 9th International Solar Energy Industry and Photovoltaic Engineering Exhibition and Conference SNEC (2015) in Shanghai, which was selected through a rigorous selection of professional judgers. SNEC is currently the world's largest photovoltaic industry exhibition. The project also won the 2015 Asia PV Industry Association, "Asia PV - Science and Technology Achievement Award (College)", 2015 National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Excellence Award and so on. Previously, the project also won the 43rd session of the Geneva International Invention Exhibition Gold Award.
