Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, visiting professor of the University of Science and Technology of China, won the 2016 Friendship Award of P.R. China on September 29th. The award is the top award for those foreign experts who have made major contributions to the country's economic and social progress. Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus is an international leading expert in combustion and the pioneer of the innovative low temperature combustion technology. She has carried out efficient collaboration with the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory of USTC since 2003 and achieved great success with his Chinese colleagues.

The group leaded by Fei, QI and Katharina have developed the diagnosis method using synchrotron radiation biomass pyrolysis, detected the midbody of enol and analyzed microstructures and chemical structures of new types of bio alcohol fuels. More than 20 high impacted international papers were published since then.

Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus is also the former president of the Combustion Institute, the academician of both German Academy of Sciences and German Academy of Engineering, the professor of Bielefeld University. With her cultivation and referrals, Chinese including USTC top researchers and students begin to hold important positions in the area of combustion. Three Chinese young researchers have received the top award by the International Symposium on Combustion, the Bernard Lewis Fellowship. All of them come from USTC. Our fundamental research in combustion has developed dramatically with her support. Now the number of published papers in the two ore journals of "Combustion and Flame" and "Proceedings of the Combustion Institute" has climbed to the second place, with 1/4 from USTC.
This award is derived in 1950s from the award that encourages experts from former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. After the reform and opening-up, "Friendship Award of P.R. China" was set in 1991 to award 50 foreign experts each year by the Sate Council. The 2016 Friendship Award of P.R. China is presented on September 30th, just before the National Day, to 50 experts from 21 countries.
