USTC Held the 3rd China and Korea Cultural Heritage Conservation Forum for Postgraduate

    The third China and Korea Cultural Heritage Conservation Forum for Postgraduate Students was held in the Instrument Center for Physical Science of USTC by Basic Research Center of Conservation Science on June 27, 2016.The theme is “Theory and Practice of Cultural Heritage Conservation”. Over 10 universities and institutes including Peking University from China and Korea attended this forum this year and gave lectures of their latest achievements of cultural heritage conservation.

    ZHANG Xuelian, a researcher of Institute of Archaeology, gave a lecture on revealing social ranks by studying ancient people’s diet. Professor Gyu Ho Kim from Kongju National University, Korea introduced the difference between western and eastern culture, and the eagerness to have more opportunities to research on cultural heritage conservation with China, especially USTC.

    Postgraduates from home and abroad also reported their great progress on the research projects. Unlike other universities, Basic Research Center of Conservation Science of USTC focuses on research cultural heritage conservation using the basic science tools with the great advantage originated from the strong basic science of USTC. ZHANG Xiaoning, a PHD candidate from the research center did his research on using polarized infrared microspectroscopy to apply to analyzing the micro-zone of the cultural heritage samples non-destructively. His research was appreciated by experts because of the chemical analyzing method used in analyzing the cultural relics. With the development of the technology of the cultural heritage conservation, more and more professional staff began to realize that basic science such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology is significant in protecting cultural and historical relics, which is a guarantee to make the preservation and restoration job scientific and effective. Attendees expressed their strong willing to seek cooperation with Basic Research Center of Conservation Science of USTC to further their study on cultural heritage conservation.

    The Basic Research Center of Conservation Science of USTC was established in 2011. It is an academic platform in Department of History of Science and Scientific Archaeology of USTC combining the scientific research advantage of USTC with cultural heritage conservation practice. The establishment of Basic Research Center of Conservation Science meets the requirements of developing the cultural heritage conservation technology into conservation science in China.

    China and Korea Cultural Heritage Conservation Forum for Postgraduate Students was held for three years continuously, leading by Professor GONG Decai, Director of Basic Research Center of Conservation Science and also a professor of Department of History of Science and Scientific Archaeology of USTC. The forum keeps a widening trend, within more and more researchers and students attend to exchange ideas thus promote the studying motivation of the young researchers and boost the advancement of the cultural heritage conservation science ultimately.
