On July 14, Professor Saffa Riffat, President of the International Society for Technology in Sustainable Energy, was invited to the School of Engineering Science and gave a report entitled with Inventions and future inventions in building and energy. Prof. Ji jie host the report.

Prof. Saffa highlighted the significance of patent protection which is often neglected by students. Taking the patent application process in the United Kingdom as an example, he made the concept of patent protection clear and in detail. It leaves such an impression in students’ minds that they wanted to share with more people. He then talked about the important role of 101 kinds of inventions changing the world and the catastrophic damage of atomic bomb so as to reveal the two sides of one science coin. After that, he showed future life full of technological sense by many little videos on transportation, agriculture and urban, pointing out the research trend. In the end, based on students’ questions, Prof. Saffa told his understanding of hot spot on the research of refrigeration technology, robotics, thermal sciences and energy sectors and his perspective of the comparison and emphasis on the use of fossil energy and clean energy. He also gave some guidance for the students’ researches.

This meeting attracted so many students and teachers as well that the classroom 504 was packed. It is the ninth report held by the Academic Forum. Follow-up report of the Forum will continue to invite academic experts and scholars specializing associated with majors in engineering sciences to bring more exciting reports and academic exchanges.
Professor Saffa Riffat is also Chief Professor of sustainable energy technologies Nottingham University, Institute for Sustainable Energy Technology and director of the Institute of Building Technology Institute, Chartered Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services and Engineers Society of Mechanical Engineers.
