The 1st Cultural Heritage Conservation Youth Forum was jointly held in USTC on April 11 by USTC, China Association for Preservation Technology of Cultural Relics and Chinese Cultural Relic Newspaper. Experts such as LI Huayuan, chairman of the China Association for Preservation Technology of Cultural Relics, TIE Fude, director of the academic research center of National Museum of China and young scholars and researchers from universities, research institutes and museums attended the forum.
During the forum, young scholars gave lectures about their research status on cultural heritage conservation. They covered the conservation of all kinds of cultural relics including paper, leather, metal, vierics, bamboo, wood, and lacquer artifacts. They also did researches on the conservation on the underwater cultural relics and the artifacts in the museum. The subject construction of cultural relics conservation, the conservation principles, methods and thoughts are the concerns of the experts and the youth. Among the topics, the conservation principles of the cultural relics inspired heated discussion. Common view of the conservation principles among researchers throughout the world has long been achieved. However, there are more practical problems about the conservation of cultural relics that the principles cannot solve. Conflicts between the principles and the practice have been the concerned problem of the forum. Experts and young scholars think they need to combine conservation technology with modern scientific methods to analyze and protect the cultural relics. Besides, experience and practice are necessity for the researchers. Only by more practice can researchers improve the conservation technology of cultural relics and make advances on the principles on conservation.
After the forum, the experts and scholars visited the Basic Research Center of Conservation Science of USTC. Students and researchers introduced the experiment equipment and research achievements which got highly praise by the visitors. They said they are willing to have more cooperation with the Basic Research Center of Conservation Science of USTC, applying the scientific experiments and research method to the conservation practice of cultural relics.
This youth forum has brought a good platform for the young scholars and students to learn from each other and broaden the horizon of the youngsters. The forum focuses on the frontier problems of the conservation of cultural relics and will benefits the outlook of the area.
SHI Yunli, the director of department of history of science and scientific archaeology, other experts and students from the department have also attended the forum.
