SUM open dialogue was held in Sept. 7 at the auditorium above water, where 12 excellent students from Stanford and MIT were invited to express themselves and communicate with USTC students. Throughout the open dialogue, we could see nothing but humorous and cleverness within speakers’ talking. The central aim of this dialogue is to provide a platform for students from Stanford, MIT and USTC to know better about each other. Furthermore, they’ll strengthen the friendship between these three universities during the process.
At the beginning of the open dialogue, two hosts introduced all of the 12 guest students to the whole audience. During the short interview, the students talked about their understandings of SUM and their experienced in Hefei. They highly commended the summer camp, and wished to learn and communicate more with others in the next few days.
During the audience interplay, the crowd in the auditorium became excited, and audience started to scramble to raise their questions. The guests talked a lot about interesting things during their research and their daily activities, including experience on how to avoid tough advisors, a grandiose plan to set up a company in China, etc. Also, they encouraged students in USTC to cherish their time in campus and try hard to learn more. In addition, they attached great importance to enthusiasm and innovation, explaining that those two are fundamental in scientific research. Applause lasted for a long time, pushing the whole interview atmosphere to a climax.
Finally, as an end of the open dialogue, all the students took a group picture on the stage while some USTC students still staying in the auditorium, hoping to communicate with foreign friends one on one.
Stanford-USTC-MIT events (aka SUM) are a platform for faculties and students in Stanford, USTC, and MIT. It was firstly held in 2012 in Geophysical, transforming into Physics, Chemistry and Geophysics in 2013, into Management Science in 2014 and returning back to Geoscience this year. The research area is changing, and the forms and organized events are expanding and developing. These three universities would continue collaborations in different areas in the future, and provide more opportunities for exchanging through SUM.
As a traditional part in SUM, open dialogue is held annually. The dialogue has witnessed a great success during the past years, and it also receives warm welcome and high reputation this year. SUM is going to invite more students and professors to the open dialogue at next time.
